Thin Spaces

Recently I was driving back home late in the evening, after a long day on the road visiting family and celebrating with friends.  As I was driving the final stretch of interstate, I could see lightning from a storm in the distance, reminding me of similar evenings filled with heat lighting growing up in the Midwest.  I distinctly remember riding in the back of our mini van as a young girl after visiting my Grandma one evening when one of these storms came into view: where the lightning strikes, but the world is quiet, the sky is clear, and the stars are bright.  In both of these moments, looking into the distance at quiet light, the vastness of the world broke apart and who God is was immediately clear to me.

Thin spaces are these moments where the world seems to break apart and God is within reach here on earth.  It’s like the gap between heaven and earth shrinks to where you could reach out and touch God’s face without effort.  It’s the moments where He is within inches of the ground we stand on and you could grasp His hand as easily as you could bend over to pick a flower from a garden.  It is in these moments, where God moves and instead of life just passing by you get a glimpse of who He is and what may be coming ahead.

I desire for worship to be in this thin space, a space where God comes in close.  Where His hand and His presence are felt deeply by us: His sons and daughters.  Where we can get a glimpse of heaven that is so real, we are drawn to love Him more deeply and intimately and where we can freely share stories from this thin space with each other.
